…learning, like creating art, affords us the opportunity to express our own individuality and reflect on our culture…

Teaching Statement

My personal and professional interests lie in the visual arts and interdisciplinary education. My goal, both personally and professionally, is to promote individualized, life-long, and applied learning experiences for my students.

I believe that a society that does not promote arts practice is putting its future at risk. In my opinion, the best way to ensure that each generation has the ability to create its own culture and identity is to offer everyone an opportunity to actively participate in the arts.

I believe that an individualized, cross-curricular approach to education provides personal value to learning. This value helps individuals to become more actively engaged in, and to uncover relationships between, diverse subject areas. I believe that learning based on these principles allows individuals to apply knowledge effectively in situations requiring thinking and reasoning, enhancing motivation, encouraging collaboration, and creating new communities.

As an artist, a technologist and an educator, it is extraordinary to me to see the creative cycle of inception, creation, transformation, and renewal parallel the time and place of its creation again and again. The more I create, study and teach, the more I see my roles as artist, scholar and educator converging. Learning, like creating art, affords us the opportunity to express our own individuality and reflect on our culture. It is my passion to empower life-long learners in the construction of their own education, and the fulfillment of their own roles.
