Dead Men Tell No Tales

Studio Project/ Second Meeting with Yvette:

Here’s a few notes from my meeting with Yvette. I think I have finally had enough time to digest my meeting and make some notes. The biggest thing I learned from making the prototype and seeing the image big is that I have to make some changes to the doll before I can continue working on the costumes, etc. I am going to try and finish v.2. from drawing to manufactured in 2 weeks. Keep your fingers crossed. Here’s the list of stuff.

Changes to the Doll

  1. joint the hands and feet to maximize expression opportunities
  2. add feature reference points to face (this may just be a darker color outline, not sure)
  3. Make the right hand a full hand for better animation potential
  4. fix arms
  5. fix stance
  6. even out breasts
  7. give feet more detail
  8. recess rivets (I am going to look at Lowe’s for a different type of fastener)
  9. print larger so doll is actually 5’2"

Magnetic Paint

(Really…)

The interactive clothing design dilemna may have been resolved with this nifty magnetic paint suggested by Yvette. Apparently it is a primer that is painted to the surface and then can be painted with a topcoat in any color. It is supposed to be available at Lowe’s (go figure). I am going to go by this week and see if I can get some to test on the prototype doll. I’ll keep you posted.

Here are some links on Magnetic Paint (found and saved for me on delicious by Jerry)

Display

The large doll and 3 or 4 clothing sets will be used like an interactive store display

  1. magnetic paint will hold the clothes to the doll
  2. doll will be screwed on to wall at arms and hips
  3. foam core will be used to make the background
  4. clothing shapes will be drawn on the foam core and magnetic paint will be painted inside of the lines so that clothes can be put/placed on the wall
  5. shelves will be made for each line of doll

Installation Overview in Words (Sketch to follow, somewhere in a Daily):

  1. The Title of the Installation (Today) is Paper Dollz
(taken from the hum of "sexual objectification" and "the way marketers and media present sexuality to little girls" found in a great article on Bratz by Jerry at: http://www.packaginggirlhood.typepad.com/)

  2. The Lines of Dolls are (again…Today): Exotic, Wife/Madonna, Trophy, Intellectual, Rebel, Creative, Worker. We (Jerry, Susan, Chris, Yvette, and anybody else who wants to present comments) are still playing with these categories/lines.
  3. The Stereotypes are the actual Dolls. The Dolls will each be packaged using the standard doll and come equipped with clothing and accessories.

I think that’s it for today. I have to keep thinking for awhile but wanted to jot some notes down before I forgot. Check back for more later.

Cheers.
