Party For Mojo – Boo! Halloween Stories Collaborative Project 2006

2006
10.26

I submitted the comic to the 2006: Boo Halloween Stories site. I am very happy about this and I am hoping that it will be posted tomorrow and up on October 27 (the day we lost Mojo last year). I included Jerry on the submission form as the Editor because he was so helpful with the story line and proofing.

Although "Party for Mojo" was not the original planned Tribute for Mojo’s One Year Anniversary I am pleased that I was successful in completing a significant project in his honor. This project took over 72 hours to lay out, draw, and color. I was surprised at the amount of time it took. I now have a better understanding of the amount of work that goes into comic books and graphic novels. I was a great experience and I plan on doing it again.

I am done for the evening.

Love to Mojo.

Party For Mojo Finished and Submitted

2006
10.25

I decided to edit the 2 Pages by Tuesday post since I finally finished coloring all 5 pages today. I thought it would be better to post all of the pages in order instead of breaking them up into two separate posts.

I also submitted the comic to the 2006: Boo Halloween Stories site. I am very happy about this and I am hoping that it will be posted tomorrow and up on October 27 (the day we lost Mojo last year). I included Jerry on the submission form as the Editor because he was so helpful with the story line and proofing.

Coloring the pages is taking longer than I had expected. I am now hoping to post the comic by Friday since I have only finished two pages by Tuesday.

Another Week has Passed

2006
10.21

Another week has passed and I am still struggling with "The Evil Cold" that I think may have turned into "The Evil Bacterial Infection". Christopher has mandated that if still have the hack I have to go to the dreaded doctor next week. I am desperately trying to avoid this. This morning I was told that "He will take me" if I refuse. This is unusual for Christopher as he normally leaves me alone with these things. I am hoping for a stunning recovery on Sunday.

It has not been the best of weeks. Monday I had to take Little Dog to the Vet on the same day as I did last year with Mojo. We are waiting for blood test results to find out if he having kidney failure. He is coughing a lot and very tired. He is also very snuggly and wants to be touching us at all times. This is very unusual for him. He is a very independent dog.

Jerry is still struggling with "The Evil Cold" as well and I think it is starting to bring him down. He is as tired of it as I am. I am also hoping for a stunning recovery for him as well.

Tuesday Christopher and I went to see the Movie "Freedom to Fascism". If your interested you can take a look at the trailers at their website . They also have a blog that is an interesting read. I am still not sure what I think about it.

The jist of the movie is that it is about "…how the wealth of our nation was silently passed from its citizens to a handful of powerful bankers in 1913. That’s the year the Federal Reserve Act and the 16th Amendment were introduced, giving a privately held corporation the means to control our finances while ensuring its interest payments through the strong arms of the newly-formed Internal Revenue Service. Ever since then, Russo suggests, Americans have been gradually conditioned to accept fewer freedoms and a lower standard of living… all the while considering debt and servitude as distinctly American values."

One disturbing point of the evening was the audience that attended the screening. Christopher and I were greeted with questions about whether Oplinger (Christopher’s last name) was German or Jewish. Apparently German was OK. Then we were told a very racist story about black labor. I was distinctly unimpressed and was forced to leave the conversation. Christopher looked like he wanted to throw up. The entire movie was spent listening to "Amen’s" whenever points were made in the film. Towards the end of the screening my head felt like it was going to explode and that I might say something that would get us "jacked up behind the back of our car." We chose to leave quietly.

I mention this because I think that it was an interesting audience and it made us ponder how our curiosity in the subject of the film could put us in contact with people who had such different views. Life is funny like that. I still recommend seeing the film and checking out the website so you can determine your own opinion on the subject. Just beware that your experience may not be exactly what you expected.

Thursday was spent at the dentist and I did not get good news there either. More work to be done in this area. Crap. That’s all I have to say about that.

Friday was a nice day. Jerry and I had lunch with Yvette (she also graduated from Vermont) and she spent lunch with us talking about her experiences there and letting me ask questions. It was great. She also said that she would be interested in being my artist-teacher for the drawing portion of what I want to do (All My Friends are SuperHeroes).

I am very excited about this. She is an excellent artist. I also learned that I will have many artist-teachers which makes me very happy since I really want to split up my work into 3 or 4 distinct areas: drawing, sculpture, video/electronic media, and photography. I also found out that I have to bring some of my work with me on the first residency and Yvette is willing to look at what I have and make suggestions. I am thrilled and very very happy that she is willing to do this for me.

Yvette is also very interested in all the stuff that Jerry has been sharing with me and would like to set up some time to learn more about it. Kudos’ to Jerry. I wonder if he realizes how gifted he is.

Jerry has been really instrumental in exposing me to all the collaboration opportunities that are available now for artists on the internet. He has been the driving force in my experimentation with the 700 Hoboes project, Flickr/Little Black Dress project, All My Friends are Superheroes, and Welcome to the Freak show. Basically everything I am working on right now …which is why he is often referred to as HEaMUSEs me. Although he doesn’t like the nickname he got it because he is the source of my artist’s inspiration.

Friday evening I wasn’t really ready to go home and I knew that Christopher was taking care of Little Dog so I took the camera out and took some photos. I really needed some time to digest events. It has been difficult trying to deal with Little Dog getting sick at the same time we lost Mojo last year. I can tell that I am having issues with this because I have been having trouble not wanting to drive my car off the bridge this week. Since this is never a good feeling to be experiencing I decided that some alone time might be in order. I wound up walking around downtown for about an hour taking pictures. I won’t say I felt better but at least I could go home and not feel like I was going to cry all night. It is difficult to watch Little Dog’s decline and my soul hurts. I keep reminding myself that this to shall pass.

Well that brings us to today, which is Saturday. I slept in until noon in hopes of promoting my stunning recovery. Today I am going to color "Party for Mojo" and hopefully post it. I was also looking at the website and need to add some reading and other stuff to the Influences page. I plan on spending most of the day on the couch or at my outside desk working on stuff and spending time with Little Dog.

Cheers.

The Return of "The Evil Cold"

2006
10.15

Well it’s Sunday and I am still suffering from "The Evil Cold". Tuesday I was out of work again and wound up sleeping most of the day. I called Blair and postponed Darkroom Night in fear of transmitting "The Cold" to her.

Jerry was not so lucky and was out Wednesday sick with "The Evil Cold." I spoke with him today and he is still under the weather. He did come over for Wordpress/Webpage/Hobo Drawing Wednesday so he could get out of the house for awhile. Needless to say, we didn’t get much done but we watched a great animated movie and I was able to work on my "Party for Mojo" Comic.

Thursday and Friday I just kept trying to recover. Saturday evening was spent at Jill’s meeting Mathew’s brother from Michigan. Sunday was spent trying to clean the home and do some laundry because I haven’t been able to for the last two weeks. Sunday was also spent putting toghether my new bathroom that Christphopher has been working on for the last month. It is beautiful!

Since most of the week was spent on the couch trying to recover from "The Evil Cold" I was able to complete all the line drawings for "Party for Mojo" for the Boo! 2006 Halloween Stories submission.

Here are the line drawing pages. If you want to see them larger (8.5×11) click here to download a .pdf (Adobe Acrobat Reader) file. Next week I will color them. Thanks as usual to Jerry for story advice, spelling, and grammer checking:)

Enjoy.

I forgot to Add I Got Accepted to Vermont

2006
10.09

I am still bewildered by this turn of events as I was not expecting to be accepted this go around. I sent my check today so that they will hold my spot. I am concerned that my freaking out may cause me to delay in the necessary stuff. I also forced myself to fill out my FASFA form even though I can’t submit it until they resend my pin.

I have decided to simply put one foot in front of the other and keep going.

The Lady Madonna Dilemma

2006
10.09

I have been struggling with a bad cold since Wednesday of last week. Jerry came over to work on Hoboes last Wednesday but I really couldn’t get much done. By Thursday I was sick sick sick and unable to move. I slept a full 24 hours and had a fever of 103 most of the day. Friday I went to to work and probably shouldn’t have but I have been in computer hell all last week and it was continuing into this one. Why you ask:

I finally got my new computer. A lovely black Mac Book with an Intel chip. Hooray you say? Well sort of. If you don’t want to hear a lot of computer mumbo jumbo skip to I mustered through the weekend and…..

If you do here is a quick rundown on the interesting stuff. I decided to run a program called Parallels Desktop for the Mac. It is super cool. It lets Mac users run Windows, Linux or any other operating system and their critical applications at the same time as Mac OS X on Intel-powered iMac, Mac Mini, MacBook or MacBook Pro.

It blew my mind all last week and I really couldn’t function. It all seems like a dream. I had to keep pinching myself to see if I was really awake. At night I had dreams of watching myself walking through the Mac OS and them leaping into a Windows application. Very Tron. Very Cool.

Why is this cool? Well, unlike dual-boot solutions, in which users must completely shut down Mac OS X and endure a full OS start-up cycle to access a important application, Parallels Desktop for Mac lets you run Windows programs (like Outlook) without having to give up the usability and functionality of your Mac for even for a few minutes.

Why is this not cool? I lost the functionality of using my left and right hand to operate 2 machines. Before the "change" I ran a Mac and PC at the same time. I did stuff on the PC with my left hand using the Wacom tablet and stuff at the same time using a mouse and my right hand. Very efficient. I am hoping that the integration and shared document folders will make up for the effiency loss. We will see.

What they don’t tell you:
Mac OSX controls all the ports and network connections making wireless on the PC side and syncing of devices inoperable (for example my Treo – workaround: use active sync to sync wirelessly. Not the best situation but it will work for now). Maybe they will fix this.

If your network isn’t set up to allow for this you can get bumped off for having duplicate IP numbers. Crappy.

Using VPN on the PC side seems to go little wonky

It is very easy to reformat your Windows installation. I did it. Set me back a couple of days. I was pissed. I did find out that there is a backup file. Make sure you make a copy of it.

I could continue but this is not the time or place. If you decide to use it I think it is super cool and mostly functional. It will probably get better with time. Here’s a picture of my new Mac running Windows XP an OSX at the same time. (Maybe I will get brave and try Linux next but I’m not making any promises right now).

Mac Running Windows and OSX

On to more creative endeavors .I mustered through the weekend and was able to get some work done. I’ll start with Lady Madonna.

I was finally able to get Lady Madonna to stand on her own 2 feet. Hooray! The bad news (there is always bad news) is that the cello body will not work. It is not proportionally correct for Anna Swan (the largest woman in the world). Here is a picture of Lady Madonna standing on her own.

Lady Madonna Stands

I was left to ponder the new situation. Luckily my friend Kym was coming over to do a little Andy Warhol Factory action in the studio. She was helping me foil the microscope slides for the 21 strands of hair for Lady Madonna’s head. We were able to complete 7 strands in about 8 hours. Take a look at all our hard work:

7 Strands of Hair

A little note about Warhol. My friend Kevin was telling me about the Warhol special on TV. I thought cool. I don’t really watch TV so I figured I would miss it. Funny how life is. I decided to turn on the TV and the special was on. Groovy. My favorite quote from the entire episode?

"Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide whether it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they’re deciding, make even more art"

Cool.

I pondered the Lady Madonna Dilemma all weekend and finally got an idea that started to jell. HEaMUSEs me (Jerry) helped me as usual (his contributions were Helter Skelter and Lovely Rita). HEaMUSEs me also helped locate the Beatles Page and the Quasi-Modo page. He’s a whiz when it comes to finding things. Here’s what we got:

Welcome to the Freak Show will be a quartet of freak show women. All them will continue the Beatles theme. Here they are (make of them what you will):

Lady Madonna
Based on: Nova Scotia’s Remarkable Giantess (Anna Swan)
Song Title: Lady Madonna
Musical Instrument: Double Base

Penny
Based on:
The Mexican Lilliputian (Lucia Zarate)
Song Title: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
Musical Instrument: Violin

Violetta
Based on:
The Living Shop Window Bust (Aloisa Wagner)
Song Title: Helter Skelter
Musical Instrument: Cello

Clementine
Based on: The Bearded Lady of Thaon (Clementine/Clementine Clatteaux / Clattaux – or Catherine Delait)
Song Title: Lovely Rita
Viola

Last but not least I also started working on my Halloween costume which has posed yet another dilemma:
To Be a Pirate or a Pirates Wench. He he.

HEaMUSEs me is voting for a Pirate, specifically Mary Read or Anne Bonny. I haven’t decided which one I like better yet. So, saying that here is the beginning of the pirate costume.

Pirate Costume

Well tomorrow is Darkroom night with Blair (I am hoping to develop some of the Holga Pics and take another roll at the cemetery) and Wednesday is Hobo drawing with Jerry. I am going to work on the Boo Halloween Comic.

Same bat place, same bat time.

Cheers.

Unitarian Church Holga Shots

2006
10.03

So it has been a really really busy week and I am posting this in sections. I guess I will start backwards and combine a couple of days with some Holga and Darkroom activities.

Sunday Blair came over and we developed the first roll of Holga film. Excitement! We also mixed chemicals, printed proof sheets, and worked on Blair’s Mac. She needed a few things installed. That was pretty much the day Sunday.

Today I finally got to scan the Holga negatives and post them on Flickr. You can comment and view them at http://www.flickr.com/photos/jpvanarnhem/.

Note about scanning negatives:

*Scan the negative with the writing side down
*Choose transparent
*Increase the percentage if you want an image larger than your negative (I used 400 percent)
*Bring the image into Photoshop (I am using 7.0)
*Rotate and crop the images as needed
*Go to image>adjustments>Invert
*Save your image as a .psd file (so you don’t lose quality)
*Go to File>Save for Web

Works Great and you don’t have to wait to print if you lack patience like me.

Here are couple of my favorites. All of these were taken at the Unitarian Church on September 26, 2006. The church is at 8 Archdale Street in Charleston, SC. An entrance to the church grounds is at 161½-163 King Street. The graveyard is a secluded, overgrown Victorian-style graveyard. As is true for all Charleston, South Carolina graveyards there are ghost stories associated with the cemetery.

Anyone who grew up in Charleston is familiar with the graveyards. They are an integral part of growing up in the south. They are everywhere and they give the local residents a sense of peace and well being. Maybe you have to be from here but every one of them feels like your visiting friends. If you are interested in the ghost story associated with this cemetery take a few minutes to look up Lavinia Fisher Unitarian Church Charleston South Carolina in Google.

If you just want a little introduction here it is: Lavinia was buried in the Unitarian Cemetery. "They" say it was the only place that would take her body. "They" also say that the only condition was that Lavinia be buried in the back away from sight and without a headstone to record her existence. Some say she may be America’s first serial killer.

Lavinia is said to have her strongest presence where she was buried and near the judge who sentenced her to death’s grave (he is also buried here…bet he was pissed about that). Her presence is also said to be felt in the old jail she was housed in on Magazine Street. Some say Lavinia is quite possibly the most active Charleston ghost. I don’t know about that. I do wonder if you can see the White Lady in this Holga photo? Curious, the more I stare the more faces I see.

White Lady

I plan on going be to the cemetery to see who’s grave I actually took a picture of (since I wasn’t paying attention) out of curiosity. I think the next roll Holga pictures will be taken at the Old Jail. I plan to continue my Holga shots of the local Charleston graveyards since they interest me.

Another interesting note: The very first installation/show I participated in was at the Old Jail. It was called "Women Behind Bars." I had never heard this ghost story before today. Kinda groovy. Here’s a few more I just think turned out kinda cool.
