Medusa is a life size mixed media sculpture. The bust is made of chicken wire, plaster, electrical conduit, stone, and glass. The base is made of wood. She also glows in the dark. I made this piece during my Sculpture I class in 2003.
Medusa is the first piece of sculpture I have ever created. It was my first experience with chicken wire, burlap, and plaster and planning/drawing what I wanted to make on a piece on paper before I actually started working. This piece was also a valuable lesson in the fact that a picture really is worth a thousand useless words. Many of my attempts to get the Lowe’s guys to help me were foiled by the fact that I couldn’t tell them the names of what I was looking for. I finally started taking my sketch pad in with me so that they could see a picture and help me find what I needed. We still had a lot of trouble communicating with each other, even with the visual aids.

This piece is the first in a collection of mixed media sculpture that represents the 9 Muses that I contemplate when I am doing art. Medusa was created first. In 2004 I started working out the rest of the collection.

Medusa was also part of the “Women Behind Bars” installation. The College of Charleston Visual Arts Club held its annual Cheap Art Auction & Student Show on December 16, 2005 at The Old City Jail (located at 21 Magazine Street, Charleston SC 29401). The installation was in a locked jail cell.
