Revenge of the Insects

2006
08.21

I completed Project Light yesterday in the studio but was so disheartened yesterday that I could not write until this morning. I have decided that men (at least most of them) should never have access to poison or anything that can kill things because they are inhumane, serpent brained (Jerry’s explanation), and do not value living things. I say this because unbeknownst to me after we started moving everything in the studio yesterday Christopher decided to spray the entire studio with bug poison. Palmetto Bugs started flying out from every direction, landing on me, and dying a slow agonizing death. I did not know what to do, whether to let them die slowly and painfully or to squish them to get them out of their misery. I decided that squishing them was better than watching them suffer and spent most of the day assisting upside down palmetto bugs into their next life. I also spent most of the afternoon in tears. It made being happy about the lighting in the studio impossible. I should have known that something like this would happen since I was forewarned by the X-files Palmetto Bug episode the night before. This made me feel even worse that I was not looking for it.

Christopher and I had to have a discussion about the use of poison of any kind at our house. It falls in the same place as cutting our trees without telling me first. He likes to chop them to death and gets cutting happy. He doesn’t like this rule but has acquiesced because well simply put it’s just easier for him than dealing with me after. I understand that trees have to be trimmed and that you don’t want your house overrun with bugs but at least them know in advance so that they can prepare.

The revenge of the insects started this morning. I was bitten twice on the way to work by mosquitoes and have huge welts on my legs. I also had a clinger on my car (a spider) that was spinning like a top from the wind. I decided that in an effort to replace some of the bug karma I was responsible for I should stop and rescue it. It promptly landed on me and crawled up my skirt. I was in the middle of the street jumping up and down trying to find it. A woman stopped to ask me if I was ok. She was nice enough to stop too and help me check myself. We never did find the spider and everything my skin crawls I think it’s on me. I guess I deserve this.

I also found out we have a rat in the Darkroom. I have asked Christopher to put a living trap (not poison or one that springs and kills or dismembers) in the room and am hoping we will catch it. Now I am also concerned when I am developing prints that the glowing red dots are rat eyes. Not a good day.

But since Project Light was successful (we have light) I will post some pictures so you can see. It took all day to reorient the workspace and hang the lights. I don’t know if it was worth it (today) but I am sure I will be happy about it in the future.

Hobo Nickel

2006
08.20

I guess it is fairly obvious that I did not get back to the blog on Thursday or Friday. This week has been hectic as we will commence Fall semester 2006 at the College of Charleston next week. Until things slow down and I actually get everything ready for Vermont I think I am going to have to just keep posting updates on things. So here goes….

Wednesday night we were able to figure out the size for the images to manually do the SimpleViewer stuff for the portfolio and Blair came by and worked in the darkroom getting ready for her job interview. We had some problems with the enlarger which prompted me to ask kevin for advice again (I think there is some extra felt stuck in it) and I finally ordered the roll your own black and white film and additional chemicals for the darkroom. Kevin gave me an impromptu course in rolling your own film on Friday. It appears “roll you own” is becoming a common term in my life right now. Kevin also told me about The Film Developers Cookbook and The Darkroom Cookbook. Both of which are very interesting and I am filing away in the tomorrow file (here) for further research at a later date.

Friday Blair got her job and called me happily I think the gods were trying to tell me to be quiet Friday because something with a stinger stung me in the forehead and gave me a third evil eye but I did not listen and I upset Jerry which I regret and set me in a tailspin. I have to learn not to ask so many questions. I always forget about Pandora’s box at the most in opportune times. The good news for the day was that Jerry’s Treasure came in Friday and that made me happy since it was exactly what I had wanted (I was afraid that I wouldn’t get the exact nickel I ordered and they would send some other one that didn’t have the artwork I wanted). Some days you take what you can get.

Saturday I gave Jerry his Hobo Nickel and he seemed to enjoy it. (It was a small thank you for all the help he has given me on the website, etc. etc.) Christopher had his first wedding gig today too and I am hoping that it was a lot of fun for him. It’s almost 1am and he still isn’t back so I guessing that they are all having a good time. Jerry stayed for awhile today and we watched X-Files Aliens and Palmetto Bugs (roaches). I liked the alien episode but the palmetto bug one kinda made me queasy. I worked on the images for the portfolio and the slides for Vermont. I just couldn’t take any more words today (essay, resume, etc).

Tomorrow I am hoping to hang shop lights for project Light in the studio and move some stuff around to make better work spaces with power and light. I am very excited about this. If I am successful I will take pictures. I am also planning on finishing the base for Lady Madonna and seeing if it will actually hold this time. This whole process has not been very fun but hopefully the piece will make up for it in the long run.

So… I think we are caught up for now. I will try to post again tomorrow.

Cheers.

Elvis Lives on WordPress Wednesday

2006
08.16

Today is WordPress/Webpage Wednesday. I distracted Jerry this afternoon and we went on an adventure to the smoke shops in Charleston looking for Drum. I wound up with Amsterdam Shag. Groovy. Apparently Drum changed their “formula” and it’s not so good. The Amsterdam Shag (I just like saying it…it makes me giggle). I also had to purchase it “by the ounce” and buy papers. MORE GIGGLES! You would have to know me better to understand but let it suffice to say that I find this very very amusing. I am very excited because Jerry gave me a thank you gift for being Grendel’s Rent-A-Mom gift of a Cool Cool Cool Elvis case (he knew I wanted to start rolling my own smokes again) AND he was willing to suffer the 100 degree Charleston Humid summer afternoon to go on the hunt for good tobacco. I’ll watch Grendel ANYTIME:) We were also entertained by a street musician who gave out Jolly Rodgers stickers so bonus for Jerry he finally has a sticker for his cRYPOD. All in all a very nice start to the day. We are currently working on Wordpress Wednesday – today we are looking at the portfolio stuff again – and I will update you about this on Thursday.

Here’s a picture of my new cigarette case. It also has a holographic Elvis.com sticker on the inside!

I finally found the freaking Microscope Slides

2006
08.14

for 34 dollars for 8 packs of 72. And only 34 dollars plus shipping. All was not wasted today. I can finally move forward! I failed to mention in my eariler post that Jerry brought me more smushed pennies on 8/10 and I think these are the best ones yet. They were maybe run over twice by the train and are very very smushed.

Here’s the link for the slides in case anyone else is looking for them at a reasonable price: http://www.hometrainingtools.com

That’s really it.

Goodnight from exhausted.

Today I am going to do a lot of filling in for the last week which has blown by quickly. Wednesday was WordPress/Webpage Wednesday and Jerry came by like a trooper. We didn’t really get much done but that was O.K. I did get to see an excellent X-files about the Freak Show that ties in beautifully with my Lady Madonna/Penny pieces. I really enjoyed the episode.

I don’t remember Thursday or Friday, and Saturday was spent blissfully unaware except for the four hour interlude when Jason came by and continued working on Project light in the studio. I now have four power outlets in the ceiling and can commence project install shop lights. I was briefly awaken from my delirium for a glass of wine with my friend Jill and promptly went back to bed. I don’t remember the rest of the evening as I slept through it.

Sunday was spent cleaning the house (as I awoke at 8am) and since Christopher needed to work in his studio I asked Jerry to go to Denny’s for breakfast/lunch. He had called to see if I wanted to go the night before and I had missed his call. I had also inadvertently forgotten to eat since Friday and was very hungry. By the way, mini cheeseburgers and onion rings are the bomb. Jerry and I spent most of the day eating, going to craft stores, and hanging out at Barnes and Noble. A great way to spend a Sunday. The only thing I could think of that would have made it better was another nap.

So that brings us today and almost caught up. Susan has been editing my essay and I am grateful. Tomorrow Blair will come and we will prep the watercolor paper for printing for the Hair project. Wednesday Jerry has said he will come and work on the portfolio (I hope he never leaves…he keeps promising an invisible jet, Avenger’s mansion, permanent visiting rights and a space ship if we win the lottery so we can keep in touch…Groovy). I am very tired today and this is all I can accomplish this evening.

Cheers.

Darkroom

2006
08.08

Today Blair met with me after work and we developed a couple of rolls of film in the darkroom. We had hoped to start the emulsion process on watercolor paper but ran out of time. I had to remix chemicals because I had let them go bad (drat). I guess it is time to invest in some pint size amber glass bottles. The good news is that Blair wants to try and come by once a week or so and work so that could be productive for the Hair project. Tomorrow I need to go ahead and order film so I can roll it and get ready to shoot a few rolls and see what I get.

Tomorrow is WordPress/Web page Wednesday if Jerry is still game. Hopefully so. I have gotten together a list of the images I want to include in the portfolio and hopefully can start working on them tomorrow. I am going to owe him a lot of midnight Denny’s trips for this. I took some time off the essay and will print it out tomorrow. I have slated Thursday for the resume.

I got another rejection letter today from the the HotPressed PosterFest. They said that my work didn’t fit with the graphic nature of the show. I am adding it to the pile under the sign What RU Afraid Of at my inside desk. Sigh. I will continue anyway.

That’s it for tonight. It is late and I have a busy day tomorrow at the day job.

I Have Completed the First Draft of the Essay

2006
08.07

Unfortunately it is 4 pages single spaced so there is a lot of cutting to be done. But it is all there. Next is the resume. Hopefully Susan, Jerry, and Christopher can help me slash it down. I am still feeling happy though because it’s a lot easier to cut than it is to create (maybe…I feel like I had a kid with this one).

On a very happy note I received a gift yesterday. A wonderful Elvis Presley case to hold my roll your own smokes. Jerry brought it from Graceland. I am very excited about it. Grendel went home late last night (I was sad, he was very happy) and Jerry and I found the 24 hours Denny’s (the world has been saved by a grand slam breakfast) after I picked him up from the airport. He got lots of great pictures and I am hoping to use a few of them for the Little Black Dress Picture Book.

That’s really about it for today. Just wanted to post an update on how far I got. Have to go to work tomorrow so am signing off.

Cheers.

Grendel's Rent-A-Mom is SMOTHERING Him…

2006

and he misses his dad. He also learned a valuable lesson about respecting kitties this morning. In particular ones that are extremely pissed off that there is “yet another dog” in the house. I am sure that this IS NOT what kitty signed on for when she decided to take up residence with us in 1997. Somehow the childless, dogless, easy going hippie couple turned into a retreat for “ALL DOGS”. But enough about the kitty woes. Here is a picture for Jerry in case he finds a coffee shop with internet access in between the out of town lunch and the actual wedding.

Grendel's Rent-A-Mom is Smothering him

Yesterday went well with the Vermont stuff. I was able to complete the application. Today I am working on the horrid essay. This is difficult. As you can see I am procrastinating by taking pictures of Grendel with my camera phone and looking up interesting facts on boingboing. Something to note about today since Jerry in in Mephis: Arthur Lee, singer and guitarist of the 1960s band Love, has died in Memphis at the age of 61 following a battle with acute myeloid leukaemia on Thursday. He was a Memphis native who called himself the “first so-called black hippie.” Lee formed Love in Los Angeles in 1965.The multiracial band recorded three groundbreaking albums that fused rock, blues and psychedelia. He was born on the same day as my father. I have always found him interesting.

Enough …I must continue working and stop dilly dallying around. I will say that Grendel’s constant company on the couch and the fact that I finally got my iPod to stop playing country music and Meatloaf have made this process much more enjoyable. I will post more later.

cheers.

Grendel Comes for a Visit

2006
08.04

Today I am off work and working on my Vermont essay and application. I am also watching Grendel. Yesterday I dropped Jerry off at the airport and all went well on his flight. Today he is supposed to be going to Graceland (I am so jealous) and promises to take pictures for me for my Little Black Dress project. In exchange I am posting a few pictures of Grendel so that Jerry can see them when he gets back from his outings today. He is supposed to have internet access in the hotel. Grendel was a little despondent yesterday after he realized Jerry wasn’t coming back, so last night Christopher and I slept in the lavender room and Grendel slept on the bed with us and Little Dog slept in his bed on the floor. Kitty was able to sleep inside and we all got to rest. This morning Grendel seemed much better and was quite content to chill on the porch and has been sleeping on the couch with me while I work with Little Dog by my feet. I will try to post more later today or tomorrow.

Cheers.

David of the Dead

2006
08.02

Today some more backtracking because I don’t have the energy to do much else. Jerry and Grendel came by for another play date. Jerry goes to Tennessee tomorrow and promises to take pictures of Graceland for my Little Black Dress Project. I can’t wait. I also get to watch Grendel for Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Bonus! Grendel is a wonderful snuggly couch puppy. Other than the fact that Little Dog is enamored with Grendel and can’t stop trying to get him to well…let’s say…play… it’s all good.

Well, with all of that said let me give you an update on WordPress Wednesday. Didn’t get much done today but Jerry said I need to get the pictures together for the simpleviewer portfolio stuff. Cool. That’s really the last big piece of the website (minus tweeks of course). I will try to work on this while I am off.

To the backtracking: Today I am going to talk about David. David is a 6 foot (70”H x 20” W x 32” D) Day of the Dead sculpture I created in December of 2003. He was my first try at a couple of different things 1) building an armature for a large piece (which I did not do successfully), 2) learning how to braze metal, 3) working with stained glass paint to create semi-realistic drawings, and 4) working with re-used/found objects (bottle caps, clothing, and other miscellaneous found things. This piece took me a couple of months to complete since studio time is often difficult to come by in conjunction with my rather demanding and hectic day job. Here is the original sketch:

Original Sketch of David

First lets talk about the guitar. Here is a picture of the guitar body for a point of reference.

David Guitar Body

The guitar was made out of baling wire. Each piece was cut, shaped and then brazed using a propane torch. Interesting process and could be a lot of fun for many things. The cost is not prohibitive and it was great learning experience. Once the guitar frame was complete I drew paper patterns for each piece that corresponded with a drawing. I put wax paper over the patterns used stained glass paint to draw each panel. This was an interesting experience and since all the pieces were drawn freehand they tended to “blend”. The end result did not have the clarity I had hoped for but the intention for using this material was that when I installed battery operated christmas lights inside the guitar it would take on a stained glass look. It did when it was completed and was very interesting illuminated. It took the stained glass paintings approximately 48 hours to dry. Once they were dried I peeled them off the wax paper and used industrial strength adhesive to glue them to the guitar. Here’s a picture of the neck and guitar strap.

David Guitar Neck
The neck on the guitar was created the same way using the cut paper patterns. I added bottle caps on the end for the tuners and the guitar strap was made out of found metal mesh. I added lampwork beads for some interest and color.

Now lets talk about the hat, hands and head. Here’s a picture of David’s head and Hat.

David’s Hat is a separate piece that comes off. His head and hands were made using sculpey mold paper mache and chicken wire. I highly recommend that if you are going to do a project like this you DO NOT purchase the paper mache. Here is a great link all about Paper Mache from the UK. It has recipes, galleries, tutorials, and lots more! Visit http://www.papiermache.co.uk/. The down and dirty about Paper Mache? If you use the strip method with paste it will be lumpy here and there. Even with sanding, etc. it is difficult. There are great recipes for better versions and I highly recommend that you check them out if you want to do something like this. Another helpful hint: If you are looking for additional resources google “sculpture paper mache for large projects” NOT ” how to make paper mache”.

Ok, now about the armature and actual body of the piece. I used a wood frame for the body and that was ok. I decided that instead of making the entire piece out of paper mache (because I did not now how to make a better version of it) that I would use a vintage black suit I had found from the thrift store instead. The suit is where the name for the piece came from. It was custom made for David. I like the suit (and the label that came with it) so I bought it. I really didn’t know what I was going to do with it at the time. Christopher wound up wearing it one year for Halloween when he was the Devil and I was a Kid Witch. But back to the armature. Because I did not use chicken wire and paper mache for the body of this piece it was wobbly and really won’t transport well. Live and learn. I tried dipping the suit in plaster to give it more strength but that did not really do it. It did give a nice texture to the material and allowed me to “sculpt” it. I do recommend the process, just not if strength in the piece is dependant on it. Here is a picture of David in his entirety before he started stooping with age and all the stained glass paint started falling apart.

If your interested in constructing a piece like this I recommend that you look at these two articles: Paper Mache Satan and Satan Making Sunday. A picture is worth a thousand words to a visual artist. Once I found these everything suddenly became very very clear to me. I will be re-working David with my new knowledge and he will become part of My Tribute to Mojo piece. What will different in the stronger, better David? 1) He will be made completely of paper mache and chicken wire including his boots, 2) The guitar will be remade using a real guitar I found in the trash by the church (score), and 3) all the drawings will be Day of the Dead drawings on paper and framed behind him of our life with Mojo. He will also get his bride.

Check back to see how he evolves.
