Smushed Pennies/Penny Project

2006
07.31

Today I am going to back track a little and talk about the Smushed Pennies/Penny Project. Seems like a good day to do this so here goes.

Many many days Jerry is kind enough to walk down to the train tracks, drop off pennies to be run over by a train, pick them up the next day, and deliver them to me with a note with the date they were smushed. Why? Long story short Kevin told us about this and assured us that if we put the pennies on the train tracks they would not tip the train over. He brought some in and they were beautiful. Of course I wanted some! What beautiful hair they would make! I knew I would love to photograph hair made out of smushed pennies for my Hair Project. I had also just heard on NPR that pennies cost more money to make than they were actually worth so this made the adventure even more appealing.

So, saying all that here are some pictures of the “Penny Smushing Process.” I would like to add that this is the first time ever I have put in a real live photo of Jerry (with his permission of course). I keep threatening to sign him up for E-Harmony or MySpace or something. So a note to the single girls…this ones a capital K Keeper, and quite cute to boot:

Smushed Pennies
Smushed Pennies from Jerry & the Train Fairy

So far to date we have smushed pennies from:
May 12, 2006
May 15, 2006
May 16, 2006
May 17, 2006
May 18, 2006
June 6, 2006
July 24, 2006
July 28, 2006

The plan is to engrave the date the Train Fairy came on each penny (this is why they are in separate envelopes) and then turn them into hair by drilling holes on either end and attaching copper O-rings to make a “strand” of pennies. I am going to need a lot of pennies so this will take a while. As far as I know Jerry’s still willing to drop off and pick up pennies (what a nice guy!…single girls take note). I was fortunate to score all the copper this weekend during project light for the O-rings. I spent some time Saturday stripping old electrical wire to get the copper out of it. It should work nicely for the O-rings.

Stripping Electrical Wire for Copper

Jerry also gave me a bunch of pennies from his trips to England. I am very very excited about these. We decided not to put them on the train tracks but I am going to incorporate them into the piece. This is probably a good time to state that Penny is going to be a miniature version of Lady Madonna (her hair is cello sheet music of the song Lady Madonna) with the body of a violin and Pennies for her hair (Penny Lane). The idea came to me after watching a Ripley’s Believe it or Not episode about circus stars. In particular, the story about the largest and smallest women in the world. Brilliant! It all started to “come together” and I had found my purpose for the smushed pennies. I will sketch out Penny in more detail and post it in the near future.

That’s about it for the evening. On a separate note I found the date by accident of the first post that I started spell checking the blog (Sunday, July 9) and I will start working backwards from here so that HEaMUSEsme will be content. I will try to continue to back track some more tomorrow. Cheers.

Inflated Steel Baby Doll Pipe Construction

2006
07.30

Today I started at 7 am and it has been a very productive day. I was able to organize my files on the computer and do some general filing and cleanup to get ready for this weekend. This doesn’t sound like much but it took about 10 hours. I sat on the couch with Grendel for most of it and thoroughly enjoyed my time with a very snuggly dog. Little Dog woke up still ecstatic and the “humping game” continued for most of the morning until Jerry came to get Grendel around 2pm. I figured this was a good time to quit the computer stuff for awhile and I also needed to pick up the trooper from Eddie’s. Got back from Eddie’s around 5pm and started working again until almost 11pm. The big bummer of the day was that I forgot to take a picture of Grendel while he was here so I will have to remember to do this on Thursday.

I was also able to get a few things done in the shop. Most importantly, I finally put together the pipe I need for my Inflated Baby Doll piece. It is ready to go. Hooray! Here’s some pictures so I don’t forget (and in case I need to remake it in the future).

All the stuff to make the inflated steel pipe

Materials Needed:

1/2″x 36″ black steel pipe – not galvanized – we’ve been thru this about why not (Quantity 1)
1/2″x 3/8″ Reducer Coupling (Quantity 2)
3/8″ x 3/8″ ID Barb to MIP Adaptor – this goes between the reducer and the hose (Quantity 1)
1/2 inside diameter rubber tubing – this goes over the MIP adaptor (Piece About 6 inches)
Hose Clamp Range 1/4″ – 5/8″ – this attaches the hose to the Mip Adaptor ( Quantity 1)
Air Compressor/Blowgun kit (Quantity 1)
Air compressor tip that fits inside the hose (Quantity 1)
3/8″ x 5″ Black Steel Pipe Nipple – these will be welded onto each piece for inflating (Quantity 6 or so depending on how many pieces you have)

Here’s how it all fits together

End 1 of Inflated Steel Baby Doll Pipe

End 2 of Inflated Steel Pip

Air Compressor Handle

Check back and see what you can do with this thing! I will be posting more about the Inflated Steel Baby Doll piece in the near future.

Cheers.

Project Light Continues & Little Dog and Grendel have a sleep over

2006
07.29

Friday night I worked until almost 9pm and and went to Jill’s for Tommy’s birthday. Misty, Chris, and Mathew helped us celebrate.

Saturday morning started with a bang promptly at 9am because Jason came over to start Project Light in the Studio. I am THRILLED THRILLED THRILLED. I should also add that this is also Project FAN and Project HEAT. All very very exciting.

Jason was able to install the the patch panel in the laundry/darkroom, get the outside light to turn on and off with the light switch (WITHOUT having to flip the switch up and count to 8, flip the switch down and count to 8, and they flip the switch back up and pray for light), and began installing the light switch and conduit for the shop lights. Here’s some pictures of Jason working very hard.

Saturday was also the night Jerry and I had scheduled for Grendel and Little Dog to have their first sleep over. Little Dog was ecstatic. Jerry brought Grendel over around 5 and stayed for a few hours. Unfortunately it stormed like mad again (it is summer in Charleston) and Grendel was a little spooked. Poor Grendel. Jerry was kind enough to fix the process blog page so that the random image didn’t come up (I had decided that it had become too cluttered) in between working on his own WordPress problems. The departure of Jerry was very sad (I don’t think either one of them wanted to do it) and I am sitting here now with Grendel trying to make him feel better. Tomorrow the plan is to work on the computer trying to get the everything together for Vermont Application and Essay weekend.

We are all off to bed. Cheers.

Couldn’t sleep last night so went ahead and finished this instead of tossing and turning in bed. Will post it to The 700 Hoboes Project in the morning.

#538 Shanty Queen Elizabeth Regina (First Draft)

2006
07.26

Marvel Zombies did not come out today so the walk to the comic book store turned out to be just a nice walk. I decided to work on #538 Shanty Queen Elizabeth Regina. She is based on Violet (my superhero) and with Jerry’s suggestion I am going to start calling her “UltraViolet”. Cool. Here is what I was able to finish this evening. Hoping to finish the background tomorrow. Cheers.

Marvel Zombies comes out in TPB this Wednesday

2006
07.26

I have decided to write this post early because Jerry and I have decided to exchange WordPress/Webpage Wednesday this week for walking down to the comic book. We are hoping they have Marvel Zombies in TPB. I am also stuck in the Video Lab and unable to leave because we are having one our summer southern downpours.

So where to begin? Let’s start with the current state of the Process Blog and Webpage. There are still problems with both. On a Mac the website gives double images and on wide screen monitors the categories don’t come up on the right side of the screen… Instead they are pushed to the bottom of the page. Why aren’t we trying to fix this today? Well See…I just can’t freaking take any more right now with this. So we are going to look at nice shiny comic books instead. Technically it could be called “Research”. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

What next: Jerry’s Art. Jerry has been extremely busy (I am thinking this is because I haven’t been taking up as much of his time with my WordPress Woes). His Gravelbed Gavin Astor illustration finally got posted to The 700 Hoboes Project and he finished #97 Lonnie Choke (which I think is his best one yet). Take a look at both!
#488: Gravelbed Gavin Astor (http://www.e-hobo.com/hoboes/488)

#97: Lonnie Choke (http://www.e-hobo.com/hoboes/i/198805710/)

I have to put this in because it’s great and I haven’t posted it yet…so even though you can go to the link above here is Lonnie Choke.

Update on HotPressed Poster Fest. No news. Maybe they will call or maybe it will be my second rejection letter for the bulletin board. I’m keeping them on the wall of my inside desk to remind myself to keep trying. I know this sounds odd but having rejection letters at least means your trying to get your stuff out versus having it just sit around doing nothing. In the same vein, I have emailed to see if I can contribute to SaidandDone (a link Jerry forwarded to me awhile back). The goal of this project is to “challenge and push the process of the individual, as well as the collaboration process, thus uniting artists and their communities”. They are in the process of compiling / creating number of books to sell, and the proceeds will help fund the Said and Done super magic awesome show tour. Sounds cool. Have I mentioned that I absolutely love love love Canada? Move me to Toronto and give me a big phat winter coat.

The 700 Hoboes Project submissions: yes, I am going to keep submitting. Why? They don’t send rejection letters. The next one to go in is going to be #538: Shanty Queen Elizabeth Regina. This one is going to be me, or actually Violet modified. Hoping to finish it by the end of the week.

So that’s about it. If I have time this evening I am going to start backtracking on the Smushed Pennies Project and continue spell checking all my previous posts. I have forgotten where I actually started doing them in Dreamweaver so I have to go thru the posts and see if I can figure it out. I really don’t want to do this but heaMUSEsme says I have to.

Cheers.

I finally got my IMP!

2006
07.25

I did not get to do any art today because it was Mathews Birthday and Jill wanted me to swing by the house. I did finally get to ask Jerry if he minded if I put up “My Imp” (he sent if Friday but I didn’t get it until Monday ’cause I try not to look at email on the weekend). It is wonderful!!!!

This led me to think that I should make a category for Jerry’s stuff since he is working so much. And so I have. The category is Jerry Spiller’s Art. So I have spent this evening finding each post with his art and adding the category so they will come up. Coolio.

Here is Jerry’s IMP:

Imogene's Ring

2006
07.24

Today I saw a little boy with a black eye and had to peer over him to make sure he was still breathing. He was, he was just out cold in the lobby. I guess technically he wasn’t a “little” boy but since I have officially reached middle age at 36 and he was way under 30 something that’s how I see him. I’m glad he didn’t wake up to see some concerned old lady poking at him to make sure he was alive.

As far as the art I decided to go to the thrift store this evening to see if I could find a pot for the linseed oil. I am going to coat Lady Madonna’s head with hot boiled linseed oil to give it more durability and a sheen. It must have been the only time I have gone for something like this and couldn’t find it. Next will be a trip to the dollar store. I also want to put this precaution in for all others: “be careful when heating …because boiled linseed oil can spontaneously combust, so avoid open flames and crumpled up oily rags”. Again always check to see what the odds are that you are going to kill or permanently damage yourself with your art projects. I can not repeat this enough.

I did however score this! A real live 1978 Dolly Parton Doll in a groovy 70’s pant suit. I think she is going to make a great super hero! Since Misty loves Dolly so (and wasn’t able to go to Dollywood when we went to Gatlinburg for her wedding) I am going to use the wonderful pant suit as her super hero costume. I may make it blue though because blue is her favorite color. A little trivia: The same year this doll came out Dolly was on the cover of Playboy Magazine (October 1978) in a bunny costume.

Since my thrift store adventure took awhile today I wasn’t really able to get much accomplished after work so I decided to make a necklace out of Imogene’s ring. I have holding on to this for quite a while and was happy to be able to start on it. The ring was far too large to wear and I wanted to turn it into a pendant. So, I cut off the ring shank and did some minor silversmithing to create a hanger, added some beads and there we go. Here are some before and after pics.

Lady in the Water…Joey in a Margarita Glass

2006
07.23

Today I started trying to put Lady Madonna together and failed miserably. I found out through trial and error that my base design has some major structural issues. Realizing this I decided to ask Christopher for some help. He tried but he couldn’t make it work either. By the end of the experimentation to see if we could fix the base I was completely frustrated and afraid if I moved on to something else I would hurl it. Realizing that my frustration levels had reached maximum capacity I decided to stop before I broke something.

Good news was that Jerry must have been feeling it because he called to see if Christopher and I wanted to go see Lady in the Water. Sounded like a great idea to me so off we went. I enjoyed the movie. I enjoyed dinner…and I really enjoyed my fishbowl sized margarita at La Hacienda. I highly recommend using Google to find reviews on the actual children’s book too. Entertaining.

Research for All My Friends are SuperHeroes

2006
07.22

Today was a quiet day. I needed rest. All I was able to accomplish was to read Marvel Monsters Group – Monsters on the Prowl, The New Fantastic Four – Monsters Unleashed, and finish Marvel’s She Hulk – Single Green Female.

I found it interesting how all the Marvel characters seem to come and go in the different comic books. I found it a little disturbing that one version of Hulk was very “simple” and the other was just plain rude but obviously more “brainy”. So…is Hulk brainy or simple? I don’t like that they don’t keep it one way or the other. Maybe it just depends on whether or not he’s having a good day? Or if he has had enough to eat? Note to self about this…make sure everything actually is the same if writing comic book stuff. It irritates the reader when the fantasy falls apart.

So I still need to finish X-Men. I have put 2 movies on the list I want to see. Transformers and Ghost Rider.

That’s about it for today.
